Akpeyi to stand as Nigeria's number one goalkeeper in Brazil

- Reports have it that Samson Siasia have included Super Eagles goalkeeper for Rio 2016

- The Chippa United no.1 shot stopper is expected to lead the Nigerian team

Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi is expected to be the Dream Team VI number one ahead of Emmanuel Daniel after he was invited by coach Samson Siasia.

The Chippa United goalie was not part of Siasia's plan when inviting three over-aged players for the Rio 2016 Olympics as only outfield players were favoured to make the cut.

However a close source within the national U-23 side told AfricanFootball that the 29-year-old has been called-up to join the squad for the Olympics and will most likely be the first choice goalkeeper.

He said, “Dan (Akpeyi) was not on the list before but coach (Siasia) realises he needs an experienced goalkeeper in the squad especially after the Korea tournament.

“He (Akpeyi) is not new to the coach and that’s why he has been selected and I can tell you that he will make the team except any last minute change like his club refusing to release him, which we don’t think will happen.”

Akpeyi will be required to resume for pre-season on July 6 and from all indications all is now set for the former Warri Wolves goalkeeper to prove his mettle at the Olympics in August.
