UNICAL wins WAUG first gold

THE University of Calabar (UNICAL) has picked the first gold medal of the West Africa University Games (WAUG) in the able tennis mixed doubles, beating the University of Cape Coast, Ghana, 3-0.

Both Joseph Prudence Ekong and Affiong Agbor Bassey wasted no time in dispatching their opponents from Ghana 11-6, 11-8 and 11-2. After the victory, Ekong said that despite winning three straight sets, the final was not an easy game, adding that he felt great that they won against the Ghanaian university from Cape Coast, while Bassey gave glory to God because there had been a protest against her.

Also, the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has moved to the top of the table in the judo event with two gold and a bronze medal so far. The gold medals came from Sanni Emmanuel in the 66kg class for men and Maria Musa in the 63kg for the women, while Sallau Saidu won bronze in the men’s 100kg category.

In other judo results, Awusa Fidelis of UNIPORT defeated Cheikh Niang of Senegal in the men’s 100kg class. Emmanuel defeated Isah Kone of UCAD of Senegal while Ilboudo Abdul of the University of Burkina Faso and Olaina Williams settled for bronze.

In the 63kg class, Maria Musa defeated Adeniyi A.O of Adekunle Ajasin University, leaving the other medals for Zoungrana Sadia University of Burkina Faso and Kafayat Adepoju of University of Lagos (UNILAG).

Meanwhile, athletes of the University of Ilorin have             protested the delay of their allowances for the Games. Pleading anonymity, some the students said that no fewer than six banks being used to disburse the funds have delayed them for reasons they were yet to understand.

They said that they were shocked that their allowances were not getting to them as and when due and that the delay was affecting them psychologically: “Some of us have received alerts but a good number of us have not and we just don’t understand why the delay,” they said.

However, worried by the situation, the school authorities have put machinery in place to see that the athletes get their dues in good time. It was gathered that the school has paid the banks, which will then pay into individual accounts of the athletes.
