Former British No 1 Elena Baltacha made an early exit at Wimbledon, beaten 6-4 6-1 by Italy's Flavia Pennetta in her first round match.
Scot Baltacha came close to retirement after she needed ankle surgery following the Olympics last year but she eventually decided to continue her career.
However, she was not at her best against Pennetta, a classy former top-10 player who is now climbing the rankings again after wrist surgery.
Baltacha dropped her serve in the first game of the match and soon found herself 5-2 down but she showed good fight to claim her only break of the match when Pennetta served for the set.
But, having been pegged back to 5-4, Pennetta made no mistake when she served for the set for a second time and she quickly took charge of a one-sided second set, eventually prevailing after just under an hour and a quarter.
