UNILAG Boys win AKOFA Ivy League

International School University of Lagos bounced back to full force in the AKOFA Ivy Basketball League when they beat all other teams to win the trophy this year. The Akoka boys defeated Doregos Private Academy 52-36 in a thrilling final match played on Saturday at the Avi-Cenna School court in Ikeja, Lagos.

The UNILag boys, who have been champions many times in the past years, were favourites and lived up to the billing. As soon as the teams returned from the break, it became obvious that the champions were set to lift the trophy before they embarked on the long drive from their school.

They dominated from the jump ball to the buzzer. But the team, coached by Everest Ijeoma, were not as good in all categories as their girls were flogged 32-6 by hosts school Avi-Cenna in the other final. Ijeoma, who got the Best Coach of the Year award, had the answer to the disparity in the quality of their two school teams. He said, “Our girls are still working and improving. They played against very exposed and experienced opponents. As you may know, two of the players on the other team are in the school on basketball scholarships.

That explains the fact they have a lot of up and coming national players in the team. Our boys made up the difference in any case.” A Lagos State coach Yinka Oyewunmi who ran the programme with Avi-Cenna was voted the Best Coach of the Year (female). The Most Valuable Player (girls) was Elizabeth Balogun of Avi-Cenna while Samuel Nwaokolo os ISL emerged the MVP for boys.
