“This means a lot for the young people and the young players who look up to me. I could not have achieved this without the support of my team-mates.”

Katongo was instrumental in Chipolopolo’s eventual victory at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations where they defeated the Drogba-inspired Cote d’Ivoire team to win the African title for the first time.

Katongo said on SuperSport how he cherishes the gold medal from the competition and how he expects the Chipolopolo to easily overcome their opponents at the next Africa Cup of Nations in January where they face Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia in Group C.

“To have an AFCON medal is not easy. The likes of Drogba have played at the highest level of football. They have been fighting to have this medal but to no avail. They need this medal (AFCON gold) and can go to shops to buy it. But as for me, no one can get it (medal) from me,” he said.

“We were under pressure before we won the AFCON this year. Now we will go there (South Africa) and enjoy ourselves with no pressure. It will not be a surprise for us to win the AFCON.”

Zambia will face Nigeria in their second game on January 25.
