Former Chelsea, Manchester City, and AC Milan striker George Weah is awaiting the official result of Liberia's presidential election but early results suggest he has taken an early lead.

According to figures release by the National Elections Commission (NEC), Weah has won in 11 out of 15 counties but most votes are yet to be counted, BBC reports.

Weah's main rival and incumbent vice-president Joseph Boakai leads in one county and is second in most others.

A candidate needs more than 50% of the votes for outright victory, but if no-one achieves that, a second round will be held in November.

George Weah, the 1995 Ballon d'Or winner, is looking to achieve his dream of succeeding President Elen Johnson Sirleaf after he was beaten in 2005, when he came second in the presidential election with just over 40 percent of the vote, behind the outgoing president.

The 51-year-old is already a senator and is standing for the Congress for Democratic Change party

Weah will have to beat closest rival Joseph Boakai to become the next president of Liberia.

And despite media reports and twitter claiming he has already won, the official result is due later on Friday, October 13.
