Just before Nigeria's victory over Zambia which ensured the Super Eagles will be in Russia next year, John Mikel Obi showed his sense of humour at a press conference, as he joked about retiring for national hero Alex Iwobi.
Mikel and Iwobi were among the Super Eagles players that entertained question from journalists at a press conference before the game against Zambia in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
During the question and answer session, Iwobi was asked if he was looking to take the No 10 jersey when Mikel Obi retires.
The question caused a big laughter in the room as Mikel playfully tapped Iwobi on his head.
Iwobi said: “I don’t want to talk about this because as you can see, my captain is already slapping me,” Iwobi said to the amusement of everyone at the presser.
“But about the shirt, I’m not really bothered about the shirt. If I get number 10, I get it all I know is I’m here to represent my country and I’m proud to wear the colours."
Mikel on his part reacted: “Don’t worry, I will soon retire for you."
Nigeria qualified for the 2018 World Cup after a 1-0 win over Zambia on Saturday, October 7, at the Godswill Akpabio stadium in Uyo.
