- Nigeria's D'Tigress defeated rivals Senegal to win the 2017 Afrobasket championship

- The national team has qualified for next year’s world championship as African champions

- This is the third title Nigeria will be winning having also won in 2003 in Mozambique

The D’Tigress, Nigeria Senior Women’s Basketball team have won the 2017 Afrobasket Championship.

Sam Vincent's team defeated Senegal 65 - 48 in the final played on Sunday, August 27.

D’Tigress last won the biennial championship in 2005. This is also their third title having won in 2003 in Mozambique.

The team all seven games enroute to the final. The Senegalese team won the first quarter 18-12; but D’Tigress clawed their way back and by half time it was Senegal 28 -33 Nigeria.

D’Tigress built on their lead in the 3rd quarter before securing the win in the fourth quarter with the game ending 65 - 48.

The team will be one of two teams to represent Africa at next year’s world championship.
