UEFA launch plans to turn Champions League into WEEKEND competition

- UEFA is planning on shifting Champions League games to the weekend

- This would affect league matches traditionally played on the weekends

- Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona are in support of the concept

UEFA's bizzare plans to move the Champions League games played on Tuesday and Wednesday to the weekend has been revealed.

According to reports, the matches in the knock-out phase will be played on Saturday with Sunday being considered.

NAIJ.com understands that matches from the quarter-final stage will be played at weekends starting from 2021 following discussions by UEFA executives.

UEFA believes moving the most high-profile matches to the weekend would see a huge rise in global TV revenues.

Afternoon kick-offs in Europe would allow live screening in the evening in Asia and the morning in North America, allowing the maximum worldwide reach.

Premier League boss Richard Scudamore is however in opposition of the concept despite support from clubs like Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

A report by the Sun reads: "The plans will see all four quarter-final games played on the same day, with a week between the two legs as is currently the case.

"After a free weekend, the semi-finals would also be played on back to back weekends.

"At this stage it is suggested all the games would be played on a Saturday but it is possible they could be spread over the weekend, with games on the Sunday as well."

UEFA chiefs will begin talks for the changes in the coming weeks.
