Timothy Abiara, a Kwara table tennis player, on Thursday, March 31, slumped and died while training at the table tennis hall in Kwara state stadium complex.
It was gathered that Abiara died during a game with another player.
According to report, the incident occurred when Abiara suddenly held his chest and started shouting.
However, those watching the game thought he was reacting to a lost point, and reacted slow.
Abiara was confirmed dead at the Kwara state General Hospital, where he was rushed to.
While reacting to the development, Kale Ayo, Kwara state Commissioner for Sports, described the situation as pathetic, even as he commiserated with the family of the deceased.
On his part, the Kwara state Director of Sports, Tunde Kazeem, described Abiara’s death as a sad and unfortunate situation.
However, he charged other athletes to always embark on regular medical check-ups.
NAIJ.com recalls that Abiara represented Kwara state at both the 2011 and 2012 editions of the National Sports Festival in Port Harcourt and Lagos.
The late Abiara, who hails from Ogbomoso in Oyo state, was a fashion designer by profession and was aged 45.
He was survived by a wife and four children.
