Cristiano Ronaldo has been crowned Portugal’s player of the year after leading his country to Euro 2016 glory and winning the 2016 Champions League with Real Madrid.

The Real Madrid superstar's club teammate Pepe and Sporting CP goalkeeper Rui Patricio were beaten to the award which was issued at the Quinas de Ouro gala.

Ronaldo, 32, helped his country to their first ever major trophy at Euro 2016 despite being forced off injured in the first half of the final.

Months earlier he has won the Champions League with his club side after scoring the decisive penalty against Atletico Madrid.

Ronaldo said: “It was a very special year for me because the Euros was the only trophy I was still missing.

“I want to thank the Portuguese people again, they gave us confidence on our way to the title.”

Bayern Munich youngster Renato Sanches was voted the young player of the year to add to his Golden Boy award and Euro 2016 Young footballer of the year award.

Portugal coach Fernando Santos lifted the coach of the year award for guiding his team to glory.

Cristiano Ronaldo can add the Portuguese footballer of the year gong to his FIFA and UEFA footballer of the year award.

The Portugal captain also won the Ballon d'Or award and the Best European Sportsperson 2016 award.
