Jesse Lingard scored a stunner; picking the ball from his half and getting past three players before firing past former teammate Victor Valdes in goal.
Substitute Rudy Gestede scored as almost brought Boro back into the game but Antonio Valencia scored a late goal to kill off any hopes of a comeback.
The win sees United move into fifth place ahead of Arsenal who drop into sixth place. The Red Devils trail fourth place Liverpool by three points.
