In what would have been a major upset in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL), MFM FC of Lagos almost recorded an unbelievable win against mighty Enyimba away from home on Saturday, March 11.
The Olukoya Boys fought so hard to earn a precious point against the seven time NPFL champions at the U.J Esuene stadium in Calabar.
In-form striker Stephen Odey who netted the lone goal against Remo Stars a week ago grabbed a crucial goal in the 23rd minute when his shot was slightly deflected into the net after Enyimba defenders contemplated on a move.
And from then on, the Peoples’ Elephants went hay-wire trying to restore parity but all their efforts were fluffed and both teams went into the break with the visitors taking a surprise lead into the tunnel.
The hosts however began the second half with ‘rage’ as Ibenegbu combined well with Mustapha in the 55th minute, but the latter’s strike sailed over the bar, with things looking good for the ‘church boys’.
Enyimba finally proved their prowess just five minutes into the end of the massive encounter when Mustapha’s sensational bicycle-kick sent the crowd into the wilds.
MFM FC boys however managed to hang-on and that was how it ended. Enyimba 1 – 1 MFM FC.
As a result, MFM FC who have a game at hand remain fourth on the NPFL standings with 20 points from 11 games. Enyimba remain 11th on the standings with 15 points from 12 matches.
Plateau United who host Kano Pillars on Sunday, March 12, lead the pack with 22 points from 12 games.
