In what could be described as a bad day, Manchester United were forced to a 1 – 1 draw by visiting AFC Bournemouth in a highly entertaining but controversial English Premier League fixture.
United’s leading goal scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic missed a penalty late-on as the Red’s missed a chance to temporarily move-up to the fourth position, having occupied the sixth position on the EPL log for several weeks.
Marcus Rojo opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when he deflected Antonio Valencia’s shot into the net to put his side ahead.
Joshua King however restored parity for the visitors when he slotted home a spot kick after Phil Jones brought-down Marc Pugh in the box.
A moment of controversy came in the 45th minute when Andrew Surman received his second yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct and was sent off.
He appeared to have hopped on Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s head as the United player went down to the turf.
Camera replays however showed that Zlatan also had a pound of his flesh as he elbowed Tyrone Mings during a set-piece, but the visitors were punished and reduced to 10-men.
It was all Manchester United in the second 45 minutes with a one-man advantage, and Pogba combined well with Rashford, but somehow the home side failed to secure winner.
Then the chance came in the 71st minute when Adam Smith handled Pogba’s flick in the penalty box with the referee pointing to the spot.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic who has scored 26 goals so far this season stepped-up, but his poor effort was saved by goalkeeper Artur Boruc.
Other efforts by Mourinho’s men were fluffed and that was how it ended. Manchester United 1 – 1 AFC Bournemouth.
