Ahmed Musa’s poor form may have played a part in the sack of Claudio Ranieri as Leicester City’s manager, according to England legend Gary Lineker.

Lineker believes Ranieri’s faith in Musa, despite the Nigeria forward’s poor run of form, may have contributed to his sack.

Musa was operated on the right flank in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League 2-1 defeat by La Liga outfit Sevilla at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, but the 24-year-old, who moved to Leicester from Russian powerhouse CSKA Moscow for a club record £16.6m last summer, turned out a performance well below par.

And Lineker criticised Musa for another disappointing performance against Sevilla.

“Defend Claudio to the end after last season but his faith in Musa is baffling. Now I’ve said it, please prove me wrong,” Lineker wrote on his Twitter page.

Lineker, who holds England’s record for most goals in the World Cup with 10, added on his Twitter page. “Haha beautifully timed tweet. Bye Musa.”

According to statistics, Musa got only 20 touches in 57 minutes before Ranieri sent on Demarai Gray after removing him.

Musa has only four goals to his name in 28 appearances for the struggling Foxes this season.

However, Lineker criticised Leicester’s decision to sack Ranieri.

The 56-year-old former Barcelona striker believes the decision to axe Ranieri is a sign the “game’s gone”.

He tweeted: “After all that Claudio Ranieri has done for Leicester City, to sack him now is inexplicable, unforgivable and gut-wrenchingly sad.”

The ex-Tottenham forward added, “Claudio Ranieri? Sacked? Really? Dilly Ding Dilly Game’s Gone.”

Leicester’s fortunes have tumbled this season and they are currently embroiled in a relegation battle.
