Nigerian athlete Blessing Okagbare to be awarded 2008 Olympic Games silver medal

Nine years after the 2008 Beijing Olympics games, Nigerian track and field athlete Blessing Okagbare will be awarded an Olympic silver medal.

This comes after Russian athlete Tatyana Lebedeva was adjudged to have violated anti-doping rules at the Olympic games held in China.

According to the report, Tatyana Lebedeva who won a silver medal in the long jump category has been stripped of her medal by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) who found her guilty.

Okagbare, 28, will now be given the silver medal, while Chelsea Hammond of Jamaica will move from her fourth position at the 2008 Olympics in long jump to receive the bronze medal.

Meanwhile, Maureen Maggi of Brazil remains the champion as she won the gold medal in the long jump event.

The Nigerian Olympic contingent to the Beijing 2008 Olympics games now has three silver medals (U-23 football team, 4x100m women’s relay team and women’s long jump) as well as Chika Chukwumerijie’s bronze medal in taekwondo.
