Born on January 23, 1962, Stephen Keshi was supposed to be 55 in January 2017, but passed away on June 8, 2016.

The news of his death came as a huge shock to many football lovers in Nigeria and around the world as the former Anderletch defender was the first Nigerian to win the African Cup of Nations both as a player and a coach for Nigeria.

1. The death of his wife

The cold hands of death whisked the ex-international's beloved wife Kate in December 2015. She was said to have battled cancer for several years before she succumbed.

2. His sack by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF)

Stephen Keshi led the Super Eagles to win the 2013 African Nations Cup in South Africa, there by becoming the second man to win it as a player and manager after he captained the team to win in in 1994 in Tunisia.

He was fired on July 5, 2015 by the Amaju Pinnick led Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Board following a report that he applied for the vacant position to coach the Elephants of Cote d'Ivoire.

He returned home to Benin, Edo state and was there till his death.

3. Health issue
