- Mesut Ozil will sign contract extension if Arsene Wenger clarifies his future
- Wenger's contract expires in the summer while Ozil's expires in summer of 2018
Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil will only sign a contract extension with the club if Arsene Wenger is staying at the club beyond the summer.
The attacking midfielder has 18 months left on his contract and says the clubs have known his position since negotiations began.
Speaking in an interview with German football magazine Kicker, the German said: “I am very, very happy at Arsenal and have let the club know that I would be ready to sign a new contract. The fans want that I stay and now it is just down to the club.”
Özil, who signed for Arsenal in 2013 after three years at Real Madrid, said it is not a financial decision: “The club knows that I am here most of all because of Arsène Wenger.
"He is the one who signed me and he is the one whose trust I have. The club also knows that I want to be clear what the manager is going to [in the future].”
Meanwhile, Wenger’s contract runs out this summer and it is believed he could leave the club after 20 seasons in charge.
RB Leipzig manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has confirmed that he is in line to replace Wenger as at the end of the season.
Hasenhuttl only joined Leipzig in the summer, having left Ingolstadt - the club he led from Bundesliga 2 to the top flight.
Ozil has missed Arsenal's last three games due to illness including the FA Cup clash against Preston North End.
