The Super Eagles' captain John Mikel Obi has been voted NAIJ.com’s athlete of the year 2016 by readers of Nigeria's #1 online news platform.
The Chelsea defensive mid-fielder edged fellow Super Eagles teammate Kelechi Iheanacho, Super Falcons striker Asisat Oshoala and Nigerian professional rower Chierika Ukogu to win the readers' support.
The voting was conducted on the reader’s choice poll which lasted for two weeks.
We cannot deny that all of the nominees performed really well in the course of the year, but there can be only one winner.
Mikel stood out from the pack having earned about 34% of the total votes. Kelechi Iheanacho came second having pulled 23% of the total votes.
All the nominees had an amazing year, but Mikel’s exploits in the course of the year was outstanding.
The 2016 will not be forgotten so soon by the Chelsea FC defensive midfielder as he captained Nigeria to claim the bronze medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics in Brazil also getting a crucial goal at the tournament.
The 29-year-old also personally paid hotel bills for the Dream Team at their training camp ahead of the Olympic games.
His electrifying performances has helped Nigeria to a very good chance of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Mikel scored against Algeria as Nigeria thrashed the North Africans 3 - 1 in Uyo. He was also outstanding in the midfield as Nigeria edged Zambia 2 – 1 at the ongoing World Cup qualifiers. The road to Russia continues.
