The year 2016 was a whirlwind year for many world class footballers. While some seemed to stay injury free, others couldn't seem to leave the treatment table.
Injuries are a part of the game and are inevitable but sometimes they become worse than first feared.
Here are seven world class football whose 2016 was seriously disrupted by injuries.
1. Ilkay Gundogan
For a period between early 2013 and early 2014, Gundogan was lauded as the best midfielder in the world as he led Dortmund to incredible success.
However since then injuries have been unfair. The midfielder missed the 2014 World Cup and also Euro 2016 due to injuries.
He arrived at City earlier in the summer injured since April but made his debut in September. However he will miss the rest of the year after injuring his knee in early December. The German is expected to be out till late 2017.
2. Marco Reus
The Germany and Dortmund midfielder is one of the best attackers in world football and whenever he plays, Dortmund play well. The first part of 2016 was rather injury free for him but the second half has been hell.
He missed Euro 2016 and has also missed large chunks of this season due to a troublesome ankle injury.

3. Lionel Messi
Messi seems to always be fot but the truth is 2016 was a nightmare year for the Barcelona star. He arrived at the Copa America Centenario injured and only became a regular starter after the group games.
Argentina's medical team have been embroiled in a war of words with Barcelona over the manner in which they handle the team captain.
Messi has missed as much as six weeks of action this season with the international breaks masking his inactivity with his club.
4. Daniel Sturridge
The Englishman should be called glass man. When fully fit, he will guarantee you goals but he always seems to be injured.
Jurgen Klopp has been reluctant to give him a run of games so as not to get him injured.
Sturridge has admitted his injury record might be hereditary and one can relate to it. Reports claim he has missed more than four months of game time in 2016.

5. Vincent Kompany
Many think Pep Guardiola does not see Kompany as a defender who can play his style but the truth is that the Belgium captain is always injured.
Kompany has been troubled by his calf for the past two years and has missed 35 games this year due to injuries. He is another who missed Euro 2016 due to injury.
6. Kurt Zouma
Coming into 2016 Zouma could be forgiven for thinking he would be the most important defender at Chelsea but injuries are wicked.
The Frenchman suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in early Febuary which made him miss Euro 2016.
He has missed a total of 32 games this season but has been playing with the Chelsea U-23 team of late to prove his fitness.
7. Danny Welbeck
The Englishman missed Euro 2016 due to injury and has missed a total of 63 games this season.
He came into 2016 injured and when it seemed he would be Arsenal's first choice striker hyaline cartilage injury in May and is expected to be out till 2017.
